One of the most beautiful areas of the Spanish coastline, Cantabria lies on the Costa Verde and is known for its spectacular scenery, hospitality and cuisine. Our base is Isla, a lovely little town with excellent beaches and within easy access of the city of Santander and the Picos de Europa mountain range.
Tuesday: Travel to Portsmouth for the overnight ferry crossing to Santander. The Brittany Ferries cruise ferry has a range of bars, restaurants and lounges with entertainment.
Wednesday: After a full day on board, we reach the port of Santander early evening and take the short drive to Isla and the Hotel Olimpo, where we will be welcomed with a drink and appetizers before our evening meal.
Thursday: Today we visit the nearby village of Castro Urdiales, a popular resort and fishing port with a charming old quarter. Later we continue on to the pretty village of Santona, where we include a visit to a local anchovy factory.
Friday: A free day to relax and enjoy the attractions of Isla, perhaps take a stroll along the beach, swim in the
pool or visit the town.
Saturday:We enjoy a full day tour to the Picos de Europa including visits to the beautiful village and fishing port of San Vicente de la Barquera and the interesting town of Potes.
Sunday: Today’s excursion takes us to Santillana Del Mar, often described as a living museum and one of Spain’s best preserved towns with a mixture of medieval, renaissance and baroque architecture. Later we continue to the charming fishing village of Comillas, before returning to the hotel to prepare for our final evening in the hotel and the farewell dinner.
Monday: After breakfast we leave the hotel and head for the city of Santander, where there will be time to have a look around before we catch the afternoon ferry for our overnight crossing back to Portsmouth.
Tuesday: Our arrival in Portsmouth is scheduled for mid-afternoon and once we have disembarked, we will
continue our journey home to Derbyshire.
The Hotel Olimpo has a scenic location on a peninsula in the town of Isla, close to the city of Santander. The hotel gardens lead on to two sandy beaches and the hotel has an outdoor swimming pool and a pleasant
terrace. It is just a short walk to the centre of Isla. All the bedrooms are en-suite and comfortably furnished with garden or sea views and are served by a lift. The hotel cafeteria has a Happy Hour each day between 5pm and 7pm and house wine and mineral water will be served with dinner. On one evening during our stay
there will be wine tasting before dinner and on the final evening there will be a special farewell candle-light dinner with a seafood main course, red or white Rioja wine and a local liquor from Potes.
